We describe the THYME framework and show how it can help groupware developers to build applications rapidly and successfully. This paper presents an engineering methodology and a set of key re-quirements for building groupware applications that enable the analy-sis of collaboration as mediated by these applications. Whereas existing toolkits for building group-ware applications provide support for building production-level group-ware, they do not provide the mechanism for analysis and rapid devel-opment of new applications, which is necessary for the study of collabo-ration. As the understanding of collaboration within a group un-folds, ideally, the application can be quickly adopted to fit the changing requirements of the group. It also requires the capability to analyze the collaboration as it is mediated by the computer application. The study of collaboration within a community of users, as it is mediated by a computer application, requires the construction of groupware applications to mediate the collaboration. We believe that such architecture is significant for having highly flexible and adaptable service-oriented archi-tectures that are considered for the adoption to user-centric application scenarios. Based on our review for the component-based tailoring methods, the paper presents the multi-tier architecture Tai-lorBPEL, based on the ActiveBPEL engine, that supports the tailoring of personalized BPEL-based workflow compo-sitions. According to this idea, regular end-users should be able to adapt a workflow for accommodating new requirements. For future application scenarios, we see a need for adapting workflow compositions in a person-alized manner even at runtime of the deployed workflow. We claim, however, that such an admin-based deploy-ment is not sufficient. In fact, only administrator could re-define a workflow at any time. Once a workflow is deployed and started, the constructs that represent the workflow cannot be altered subsequently. Current web services composition engines like ActiveBPEL provide only facilities to create static workflow compositions.
